President Clinton, Vice President Mondale, Governor Mark Dayton, Governor Arnie Carlson, US Senator Amy Klobuchar and US Senator Al Franken, Dr. Josie Johnson, Civil Rights Pioneer and first African-American to serve on the University of Minnesota Board of Regents, along with Skip Humphrey, son of Hubert H. Humphrey, provided a glimpse into the life and legacy of Hubert H. Humphrey, the man, the father and the statesman who served as Mayor of Minneapolis, U. S. Senator from Minnesota and Vice President of the United States under President Lyndon B. Johnson.
A brisk warm wind unfurled the American flag and the Minnesota State flag atop a nearby state office buildings as the crowd estimated at 1,500 was welcomed by the voices of the St. Peter Claever Catholic Church Children’s Choir. The ceremony opened with Senator Richard Cohen (Senate District 64), master of ceremonies, who introduced legislation in 1993 to honor Humphrey with a memorial on the Capitol grounds.
A glance over the multi-generational and racially diverse crowd also provided a contemporary glimpse into the seamless way Hubert H. Humphrey communicated and connected with the citizens of Minnesota, the United States and gobal community. Joänne Tromiczak-Neid, Justice Coordinator for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and Consociates, St. Paul Province and I were among those attending this truly remarkable and historic event which will open the doors to thousands of visitors to the Minnesota State Capitol Grounds into the life and legacy of Hubert H. Humphrey.
